PRESS STATEMENT ON ELECTIONS CAMPAIGNS
AVAP Executive Director Bonnie Tembo
ISSUED BY AVAP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
MR. BONNIE TEMBO
ON 17/01/2011

The Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) has implored voters in the country to critically analyse election campaign promises being made by political parties ahead of the 2011 tripartite elections.

AVAP is concerned with numerous election campaign promises which are never fulfilled after elections.

AVAP is of the view that one of the causes of voter apathy is unfulfilled election campaign promises.

Political parties should realise that the electorate are tired of hearing same old recycled and false promises on development. AVAP wonders why politicians have to sweat ‘blood’ to convince the electorate and this simply means that they are not articulating genuine promises.

AVAP has also called upon political parties to centre their campaigns on name calling and tribal ‘gospels’. We note with dismay that the unofficial campaigns that have been started ahead of the 2011 elections lack substance. We need to have new ways of campaigning that can not only motivate but also inspire the voters.

Press Statement - Militia groups
PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY AVAP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MR. BONNIE TEMBO ON 20/10/2010

AVAP Executive Director Bonnie Tembo

The Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) has called upon President Rupiah Banda to break the silence over the alleged existence of militia groups in MMD. AVAP fears that if the issue of the militia groups is not addressed by the President, it may put the 2011 elections at risk.

Thus, the militia talk must be put to an end by President Banda.

AVAP notes that the 1996 amended Constitution outlaws the formation of private armies or militia groups by political parties or private organizations taking into account that it’s only the state which permitted to have national defense forces.

In view of this, the existence of militia groups is unconstitutional. AVAP has appealed to all political parties to desist from forming illegal ‘groupings’ that can be used as instrument for political violence. Special appeal goes to the youth not to be excited by being drafted in such groupings. AVAP calls upon the youth reject militia movements because they are a recipe for anarchy.
